Cupping Therapy: Ancient Healing for Modern Pain Relief

Updated: 6 days ago

Physical Therapist Applying Cupping Technique

Ever noticed those circular marks on Olympic athletes and wondered what they're all about? Those distinctive purple circles come from cupping therapy, an ancient healing technique that's found its way into modern physical therapy practices—including right here at Rehab Associates.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping involves placing specialized cups—traditionally made of glass, but now often silicone or plastic—on the skin. Our physical therapists create a vacuum effect either through heat or a pumping device, which gently pulls your skin and superficial muscle layer into the cup.

"The suction effect is like a reverse massage," explains one of our certified physical therapists at Rehab Associates. "Instead of applying pressure downward into the tissue, we're lifting it upward, which creates a different kind of release that many patients find incredibly effective."

How Does It Work?

The science behind cupping is fascinating. When we apply the cups to your skin, several beneficial processes begin:

  • Increased blood flow: The suction draws blood to the area, bringing oxygen and nutrients to help heal damaged tissues

  • Fascial release: The lifting action helps separate layers of connective tissue that may be stuck together

  • Pain reduction: Cupping triggers your body's natural pain-relieving mechanisms

  • Muscle relaxation: Tight, knotted muscles often soften and release after treatment

Many of our patients at Rehab Associates report feeling immediate relief following a cupping session, particularly those dealing with stubborn back tension or shoulder problems.

What To Expect During Treatment

If you're new to cupping, here's what a typical session at Rehab Associates might look like:

First, our physical therapist will identify the areas that need treatment. We'll apply a light lubricant to your skin for comfort, then place the cups in strategic locations. You'll feel a tugging sensation as your skin is drawn upward into the cup—most patients describe it as strange but not painful.

The cups typically remain in place for 5-15 minutes, depending on your condition and tolerance. Some techniques also involve moving the cups while maintaining suction, which we call "dynamic cupping."

And yes, those characteristic circular marks may appear, caused by small blood vessels responding to the change in pressure. They're generally painless and disappear within a few days.

Who Can Benefit From Cupping?

At Rehab Associates, we've successfully used cupping therapy for patients with:

  • Chronic back and neck pain

  • Shoulder tension and frozen shoulder

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Muscle strains and spasms

  • Athletic recovery

  • General stress and tension
