What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, characterized by the deterioration of joint cartilage, particularly in weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips. As cartilage breaks down, bones rub together, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced joint function, which can lead to difficulty in daily activities.

OA affects an estimated 27 million Americans, with risk factors including age, genetics, past injury, occupation, sports, and obesity. Women over age 50 are particularly at risk, and it is the leading cause of disability in U.S. adults.

How is osteoarthritis diagnosed?

Osteoarthritis is typically diagnosed through an X-ray or by a healthcare provider using criteria such as joint pain, stiffness, crepitus (joint noise), and bone tenderness. Common symptoms include stiffness in the morning, joint pain during activity, and joint noises like cracking or creaking.

Physical therapists use these criteria to assess OA and may recommend further tests or refer you to a doctor for an official diagnosis. A thorough evaluation helps tailor treatment to your specific symptoms.

Can physical therapy help?

Physical therapy has proven effective in managing OA, helping reduce pain, improve joint function, and potentially delay surgery. A physical therapist will develop a personalized exercise program, use hands-on therapy, and provide lifestyle advice to improve movement and overall health.

In addition, they can guide weight management and design home-exercise routines to maintain joint function. In severe cases where therapy alone isn't enough, they may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon for surgery options like joint replacement.
